I found it depressing The older I get, the harder it is for me to read about certain topics, especially domestic violence There was a bit of that here, and combined with an aging man in the hospital and violence toward women, I found the book sad despite an overall happy ending Or at least, an ending where everything is resolved.Still, recommended for fans of suspense fiction, especially if they like a lot of suspects and trying to determine who done it from subtle hints.I received this review copy from the publisher on NetGalley Thanks for the opportunity to read and review I appreciate it was my first toe dip into Christobel Kent s work, it was the story description that initially drew me to this book, I found it very intriguing. As I said, I had difficulty at first connecting with the story If I had to pinpoint what it was that caused this I think maybe I found the writing style quite hard to follow and as I was concentrating on deciphering the language and my brain failed to engage with the story properly. The story follows Nat as she tries to decipher what has happened to her friend Beth.Once I became engrossed in the story my mind was working overtime suspecting everyone. You are kept guessing until the end and I never did work out who the killer was, so it came as I surprise, which in my opinion is a sign of a good murder mystery.I also liked how we were allowed to creep into the killer s head, seeing the facts from his point of view while still being kept in the dark over his identity. So, in conclusion, this is a great intriguing read, It s interesting and well paced with great world building it just took me a small while to get my head into the game.I received an E Copy of The Day She Disappeared By Christobel Kent and this is my own care for her mum Now discovering Beth is not returning, Nat is worried enough to do a little digging around and she is distressed to learn that her friend did not go to her mum s after all But it is not until Beth s landlady makes a shocking discovery that Nat is convinced that something terrible has happened No one, including the police, will take her fears seriously so Nat decides to investigate Beth s disappearance on her own.Nat s life has not exactly gone as planned since after going off to college and living briefly in London, she is back in the town she grew up in Now close to thirty, she is struggling to make peace with the choices she has recently made She and Beth may not have much in common, but the pair were quite close Initially a little hurt that Beth left without warning, Nat was not worried that something was amiss until Beth s out of character failure to return to work as scheduled.Beth is a bit a free spirit who is quite popular with the male customers who come into the pub Spontaneous and without many inhibitions, she enjoys going out with a variety of men Beth is a surprisingly supportive friend and a reliable employee Despite their close friendship, Nat is very surprised by some of the information she uncovers about Beth when she begins trying to find out what happened to her.Around the same time Beth fails to return, Nat s friend, Victor Powell has been hospitalized after a fall In his early nineties, Victor is quite active and well liked by the rest of the townspeople While still in hospital, he is afraid for his safety but the reason for his fear remains tantalizing out of reach Although he cannot quite recall why he is danger, Victor is fully cognizant of his concerns that his daughter, Sophie, might be in danger from her controlling husband. The Day She Disappeared is an intriguing whodunit that unfolds from three very different points of view Nat, Victor and the killer There is an underlying feeling of menace since Nat feels like someone is watching her but no one will take her fears seriously Victor is a fantastic secondary character who desperately wants to recall information that might be relevant to what happened to Beth Brief passages from the killer s perspective paint a very chilling portrait of a smart but twisted person who has absolutely no remorse for their actions Through a series of red herrings and misdirects, Christobel Kent brilliantly keeps the perpetrators identity cleverly under wraps until the novel s action packed conclusion flag 1 likeLike see review May 20, 2018 AngryGreyCat rated it thrillers have been called terrifyingly good, perfectly paced, addictive, tense, dense, extremely well plotted and beautifully written Her most recent, The Loving Husband, was an international bestseller, and it is in no way hyperbole to declare The Day She Disappeared her very best It is as brutally unsettling as The Loving Husband, but even complexly detailed and surprising as claustrophobic and atmospheric as The Crooked House, but even heartbreaking in its truths.Kent has been compared to such masters as Daphne du Maurier and P D James With The Day She Disappeared, a new crop of writers will be compared to Christobel Kent THOUGHTS I received this book in exchange for my honest review.Kent s writing style may not be for everyone It has a unique approach to the murder in that we are taken on a journey for answers along with the Protagonist and there is hardly any police involvement, and absolutely no forensics conducted It s a search for truth that a friend desperately needs to learn I found the plot flowed, transitioning from one plot moment to the next smoothly This is mostly a plot driven story, however, there are a few strong character developments involved. You re given a lot of suspects and learn right away that not everyone can be trusted.A few topics were present that left me uncomfortable domestic violence being one and the ill treatment of women in general I think some may find this too sad and caution the reader to consider this before reading With that said, I absolutely loved Victor It was great seeing a feisty ninety year old giving the murderer a run for their money Overall, I would say that this book certainly is an emotional read and while you re on an emotional roller coaster ride, you do make it to a startling conclusion and wrap up of the story perfectly.Filled with great moments of suspense but it does begin as a slow burn I love the short chapters and the wonderful very worth it ending You do have a solid plot and the comparisons to the works of Daphne du Maurier, and for good reason Complicated heroines, dark secrets and isolated British landscapes define her sophisticated thrillers, just as they did in du Maurier s Kent s latest novel, THE DAY SHE DISAPPEARED, continues this tradition in a multilayered, atmospheric thriller that explores themes of familial and community interconnectedness.Natalie has always felt a mixture of pity and envy for her fellow barmaid, Beth Beth, with her ample figure and flirtatious attitude, could take a different patron home every night and sometimes does , while the serious Nat has been in a relationship with the same man for nearly a decade But soon after Nat s breakup with that steady boyfriend, Beth disappears, leaving behind only a cryptic series of text messages According to her friends, it s not out of character for Beth to fall in love with some new guy, cut all prior ties, and start over somewhere new But the Nat thinks about Beth s text messages not to mention the increasingly troubling clues she finds elsewhere the she s confident that Beth has come to harm. And Nat is not the only one with suspicions Her favorite customer at the bar an elderly gentleman named Victor is convinced that the drowning of a local young man is somehow connected to Beth s disappearance He has seen something, but after suffering what looks like a stroke, he is not in a position to share his theories with anyone, even his beloved Nat Suspects are abundant including a researcher living off the grid, a cameraman shooting a film set near the town s evocative river, a busboy at the pub, and even Nat s ex How can Nat put the pieces together when no one takes her investigation seriously, and when there might be dangers anywhere Through multiple viewpoints including Nat s, Victor s and the faceless perpetrator s Kent s narration underscores her themes In part, the novel is about secrets about what information we choose to share with those closest to us and what we decide to obscure It s also about the difficulties of knowing who to trust, the pull of even the most imperfect family, and the challenge of starting over with or as someone new Largely, though, THE DAY SHE DISAPPEARED is about the connections that bind its characters, some of which are not immediately apparent, and about how the choices they make and the actions they take affect those around them and their broader community, sometimes in surprising ways.Reviewed by Norah Piehl flag Like see review Nov 24, 2017 Graham McGhie rated it really liked it AN EXCELLENT WHODUNIT WHICH WILL KEEP Natalie, her close friend, has cause to believe that her friend has been harmed A belief which grows ever in strength as the novel progresses In the absence of any serious police interest Natalie starts her own investigation Her suspicions are shared by Victor The narrative of the novel is related through a trio of perspectives Natalie, Victor and the Murderer This provides an added chill factor especially when we realise that the Murderer is physically close to either Natalie or Victor But the reader can t easily guess who the Murderer actually is As the story progresses, and the body of a murdered young man is discovered, gradually villagers become convinced that Nat is right and that Beth may have met a grisly end But not the police, who refuse to link the murder with Beth s many a false trail to keep us in suspense.Set with a pub firmly at its centre this novel explores the value of relationships It also features domestic violence Sophie, Rufus and bad Dad Richard, the solicitor and stresses the importance of good healthy family relationships The story is set in a village in the South East of England near the sea the local community is insular and one in which few who populate the pub and the village are likely suspects Victor, a 92 year old man who lives in a caravan near the water, is the only person Natalie trusts Natalie begins to feel someone is watching her and with that, the suspense builds I wanted to scream at Natalie to pack her bags and get herself to London, but she doggedly grabs onto any small detail of information about the somewhat mysterious Beth and pursues all the leads The police are not very interested for most of the story They have a death they are looking into, and a missing person with the reputation of party girl Beth always make this clear It then took a while to get going and interrupted the flow I think there were better ways for Kent to flit between Character wise, I think Vincent and his family are very strong I cannot say what role he has without spoiling this, so trust me that they are excellently written They carry the story and I thought they were interesting than the main plot Unfortunately, despite this largely following Nat, I never got a sense of knowing her which was a real shame The Day She Disappeared is definitely an atmospheric novel but it is too long and confusing to provide any real excitement flag Like see review Mar 24, 2018 Paul rated it liked it A middling Girl book Light on the violence, which is kind of nice, but also light on the suspense, even so for being loaded with the vet wiling away his extreme old age in a caravan read trailer park near a British resort town Victor s stalwart decency is admirable, since it inspires all the other characters except, of course, the killer to be better people, but I wonder if his reassuring presence doesn t make Ms Kent a bit reluctant to pile on the blood and gore which might have raised the stakes a bit for her heroine, a recently divorced barmaid named Natalie There s a fine, elegiac literary novel to be written about Victor and a creepy, disturbing novel to be written about Nat, but neither of those books are The Day characters viewpoints and while I m sure we are intended to feel as though we are at any given moment privy to the thoughts going through those characters minds, the resulting internal narratives are extremely jerky and seem to skip randomly among various times and events without any flow This may well be how our minds actually function at times, but artistically a stream of consciousness narration requires structure than this novel offers There is no flow to the words or sentences or thoughts And while the story seemed to get a bit easier to follow as I adjusted to the style, it was at all times an effort to read It was a real relief to start another book written with a traditional style flag Like see review Jan 25, 2018 Karen Barber rated it liked it Shelves netgalley Nat is a inner thoughts of a range of characters, and it was difficult to grasp just how they linked and who was who. After the initial difficulties with the style it was a book that became easier to read, but I wasn t convinced by just how many characters were given quite a lot of time We were deliberately misled by one or two characters, and I felt like the actual resolution came from left field. Not one of my favourite reads because it felt like there was too much going on, but I must thank NetGalley for providing me with the opportunity to review it prior to publication flag Like see review Apr 24,
