A good quick read, if you like a good mystery that promises only light entertainment Characters had enough depth to grow somewhat fond of them and the interplay of relationships The plot is fairly simple and has all the right elements for a good mystery affairs, motive and a sketchy suspect or two Set in Cumbria, during a cockermouth flood, it has great descriptions of the local scenery flag 1 eye opening backdrop in this mystery In the midst of all the chaos, Roger Alcock turns up missing Alcock had set out in his kayak to go to his store and check out the damage Something of a maverick, no one seems surprised that Alcock did such a risky thing at the height of the storm but once everything calms down, there s no trace of him so Skelgill, Leyton and Jones are on the case When his body is found a few days later, the autopsy reveals that this may not have been just an accident.Again, Beckham just writes brilliantly and if I hadn t been sick, I would have read it in one sitting This is the last, so far, of the Skelgill books, but Beckham has noted that a new entry in the series should be out in early 2018 Can t wait flag 1 likeLike see review Jul 12, 2017 Amy Peck rated it it was seen this series of books many times, listed as giveaways each time I entered I was interested in knowing what this series was like now I finally was able to find out for myself This is 9 in the DI case with all in this series The author writes in a way that you don t need to know what the first 8 are about He gives you the information needed in order for anyone to pick up this book, fully we ll know who DI Skelgill is what type person That all being said. The story I m bad with names of characters in most all books esp last names, please don t fault author if I wreck a name A man has been found washed ashore When found, the team ofppl involved weren t really convinced it was a definite homicide It could ve just been an adventurous man, that had an accident DI Skelgill finds it to be likely this was NOT just an accident The wife of the victim didn t even come to report to police her husband was missing, until 24 hours later DI Skelgill, throughout his investigation, has found pretty much a plethora of suspects different motives but must narrow it down Book has many layers to the dead man s life the people he knew was involved with This is what makes the case hard for the detective , but also very interesting for the reader Many elements for motives Lies, deceit, jealousy, greed etc but it s the detectives job to figure out the who why of Roger s death This is what makes the book so good because there are quite a few people he must clear or keep on his possible suspect list until he can further investigate backgrounds of how they knew Roger, what part they took in his life possibly his death The detective perseveres through a laundry list of suspects motives until he finally comes to his conclusion the killer is foundI was very curious about this series am very happy to have been able to read a book from it would definitely recommend this series to anyone who loves an in depth type murder mystery This wasn t an easy mystery to solve due to the many players of characters the dead man knew or had contact with If you are the type for a good murder mystery, this series will fulfill that for sure The author also pre story has a page of terms he uses to help the reader understand I ll admit, although it s written in English, it s not USA English it took me some getting used to terms, phrases, even small different spellings, than us English of course, 5he author cannot be faulted for this either as this is how his English is he s aware there are differences, thus he put in a glossary type page, prior to reading the book, for readers to understand what is being talked about, but it s not all that hard to figure out, as you read, you start to know these terms as if it s what you are used toWell written, multi layered, interesting, puzzling all the elements that make for a good mystery The death of Roger could ve easily been written off as an accident, but not with DI Skelgill, the author, as the leads I found it a quite good mystery I d like to thank the author for allowing me a chance to finally be a DI Skelgill mystery reader it was a delight reading the book I feel part of an exclusive club now, who has been part of this adventurous murder mystery type , although I m positive there are many DI Skelgill fans out there reading this series since it s 9 I ll be on the lookout for books in this series and or other books written by this author I believe it takes him well researched time to write just 1 book The many layers involved alone, has me knowing he doesn t just knock these books out in a few weeks or a month Very well written flag Like see review Apr 03, 2018 LeAnne rated it liked it This one only gets 3 stars from me because it was a slow read, taking forever to get to the meat of the mystery man takes off in his kayak supposedly to check on his store as the rivers converged and flooded the town He is spotted once, then gone, never to be seen again until he is found drowned in sea water, them again and again The writer doesn t leave many clues until the last chapter when we learn what Skelgill suspected I have read six out of this series so far, so one out of six isn t badjudging by the other reviews of this story, I am in the minority I do recommend this series though if you like British lake country with a touch of Cumbrian accents and a smart, cagey Inspector flag Like see personalities Enjoyed the read flag Like see review Sep 24, 2018 Yvonne rated it did not like it Highly GoopUnreadable, so ridiculous it was maddening Difficult to make heads or tails of anything
