images of Mary Whitehouse railing against anything slightly dirty I was a bit apprehensive, therefore, that Deep Magic might turn out to be full of rather tame fiction, aimed exclusively at young adults I needn t have worried While there is no sex and swearing, and some of the protagonists are indeed teenage, there s still plenty to sink your teeth into CONTENTS FICTIONSci fi The Tariff , by Allen Shoff Pirate Readers by James Van PeltFantasy Waracabra Tigers , by Gwendolyn Clare Wizards and Wizdom , by Ronald D Ferguson Lady of War by Caitlyn H McFarlandNONFICTIONInterviews Author Brandon Mull Artist Heather TheurerArticles The Magic Middle , by Kathryn Purdie Finding your own voice , by Jeff WheelerSample Chapters Ever the Hunted by Erin Summerill The Dragon s Price by Bethany WigginsI found the fantasy stories stronger than the science fiction stories, both in terms of plot and execution That may be due to personal taste, but it could also be that a novelette which 2 of the fantasy stories are provides scope for deeper engagement with characters and setting But I relieved to be able to say I enjoyed all the fiction, and will be keeping an eye open for the authors of the fantasy stories in the future. The choice of nonfiction content struck me as less successful while articles about crafting fiction may interest me , I suspect the same can t be the case for quite a few readers I was also unfamiliar with the work of the particular author and artist interviewed, which put me at a disadvantage As for the book excerpts to be honest, I d have preferred that the space they occupy be used to include a few stories But hey, that s just me flag 1 likeLike see review May 12, 2017 Michele Hermansen rated it it was amazing Shelves 2017 Good stuff Overall I liked this ezine quite a bit There are a few things I would ve left out here and there The only story I did not like at all was Waracabra Tigers though it was as well written as the others The two fantasy stories that were book excerpts at the end I definitely wanted to read , and probably will On the Syfy side, The Tariff was probably my favorite Good interviews and articles on writing too This ezine is really worth it s weight in gold Real score 4.9 flag Like see review Feb 28, 2017 Sherry Bledsoe rated it it was amazing Found new authors.Found new authors and at least 2, of the authors are now
